a gentle mind yoga begins.

A Personal Connection to This Work
This work is informed not only by training, but by having been all the way through it.
For years I cared for my mother as she moved through hearing loss and then dementia. I know the strain of being needed again and again. I know how personal life quietly disappears into responsibility. I know how caregiving reshapes schedules, energy, and the whole inner climate of a life.
Two nights before she passed, she fell. My son and I carried her back to bed. I sat with her through the night, helping her roll to her side when she asked, even knowing it would make her cry out in pain. Her short term memory was gone. She would rest, then ask again. I stayed with her until she finally slept.
The next day I sat beside her watching football. She had always liked the action and the colors of the uniforms. She slept. At some point I felt a shift. Her breathing changed. I got close, took her hand, and watched the pulse in her neck. Steady. Then fluttering. Then still.
Later it came to me that she passed at the precise moment she realized she needed help with something she had never allowed. She was fiercely self reliant her entire life. We never once needed to change her. When that threshold appeared, she chose to leave instead. Her independence was intact to the very end.
I told her she had passed. That she was free. That she could now go anywhere, any time she wanted. I felt her understand. And then she was gone.
What I felt in that moment was relief, calm, and a deep sense of worthiness. It was a profound gift to be present at the passing of the woman who gave me life.
That experience lives in this work. When I sit with a caregiver, I know where they are. I know what they are carrying. And I know what becomes possible when they finally have somewhere to put it down.
